Implementation of Food For Education Programme:

Food for Education programme is being implemented in Koraput,Nawarangpur and Malkangiri districts since the year 2003-04 with the assistance from World Food Programme (WFP). A mead-morning snack of micronutrient fortified food(biscuit) is being provided to the day scholar students of the188 no.s of Sevashrams functing in these districts, where Director ST/SC is the Nodal officer on behalf of the Department.

The main objectives of the Programme are like:

  1. To increase enrolment, attendance of Primary School children and their retention in school.
  2. Improved attentiveness and educational outcomes.

Initiatives taken by WFP:

  1. WFP provides micronutrient fortified biscuits free of cost at the district headquarter which is further transported to the school points by the transporter engaged by the Dist. Welfare Officer.
  2. Additional support by WFP @Rs 5000/per Sevashram for development of kitchen garden.
  3. Supply of Non-food items, such as books,scientific instruments,first- aid boxes,food storage bins etc.

Initiatives taken by Government:

(i) A" World Food Programme Cell" in the State Directorate of ST & SCDevelopment Department has been constituted to monitor the implementation of Food For Education programme in these districts and the following officers of the Deptt are enstrusted to work in the aforesaid cell.

 Govt is bearing the cost of transportation of food materials from the Dist. Head-quarter to the school point.

Govt. has also provided necessary fund for the purchase of spoons and bowl for the students coming under the programme.
